dug|out «DUHG OWT», noun.
1. a rough shelter or cave formed by digging into the side of a hill, trench, or the like, and often reinforced with logs: »

During war, soldiers use dugouts for protection against bullets, bombs, and shells.

2. a small shelter at the side of a baseball field, partly below the surface of the ground. It is used by players who are not at bat or on the field.
3. a boat made by hollowing out a large log.
